AS 350
Initial Operational Capability (IOC) : April 1978
First Flight : June 27, 1974
Total Production : 7,120
The Fennec/Ecureuil is a family of multi-role helicopters featuring design simplicity, reliability and high performance. The aircraft was developed in the 1970s by Aerospatiale, thereafter Eurocopter and now Airbus Helicopters, as a replacement for the Allouette II. These lightweight helicopters are intended for both commercial and military markets. Fennec designation applies to military helicopters and Ecureuil, which means 'Squirrel' in English, applies to commercial helicopters. These platforms can be powered either by a single turboshaft engine or by two engines (AS 350/550 and AS 355/555 series). Composite materials have been used extensively in the aircraft design making it more durable and lighter. There are many variants of Fennec/Ecureuil helicopter family primarily due to the use of different power plants such as Arriel and Arrius family of engines. The characteristics of Fennec/Ecureuil helicopters also translate into low acquisition costs and low costs of maintenance and operation. Eurocopter has scored a big success through this helicopter family with more than 4,000 aircraft (2,400+ single engine models) sold around the globe so far. First flight was carried out in 1974 and the first delivery in April 1978.

The single-engine AS350 is a lightweight utility helicopter that first flew on June 27, 1974 and the first delivery happened in April 1978. The AS 350B2 Ecureuil commercial helicopter powered by a single engine Arriel 1D1 was introduced in the early 1990s. It assumed civilian-oriented tasks such as utility helicopter, fire fighting, police mission, or medical evacuation. In 1997, Eurocopter introduced the AS 350B3 Ecureuil powered by a single Turbomeca Arriel 2B turboshaft engine along with its military counterpart AS 550C3 Fennec. The new helicopter can conduct the same missions of its predecessor as well as training suing three crashworthy seats. The Arriel 2B engine was equipped with FADEC (Full Authority Digital Electronic Control) and is more powerful than Arriel 1D1 engine which allows to increase the takeoff weight. This model performs better than early generations in hot climate and mountainous terrain/high altitudes. In late November 2005 Eurocopter delivered the 3,000th single-engine Ecureuil/Fennec helicopter family to the South African Police which received an AS 350 B3 aircraft. Eurocopter stated that up to 432 AS 350 B3 helicopters were in service when the 3,000 single-engine helicopter mark was achieved.

Contractor : Airbus Helicopters
Initial Operational Capability (IOC) : 2001
Total Production : 304
Eurocopter's single engine EC 130 was conceived to provide further space, seating capacity, comfort and low vibration levels to the Fennec/Ecureuil family of helicopters. This helicopter can accommodate up to eight passengers in addition to the single pilot. Low noise emission is achieved through the tail rotor Fenestron design and the automatic control of the rotor. The cabin results more spacious (2.03m to 1.87m) and Arriel 2B1 with dual channel FADEC (Full Authority Digital Electronic Control) engine enhances the reliability of the aircraft. Moreover, a back-up control box automatically controls the engine in case of total failure of both digital channels of the FADEC. The military variant, EC 130B4 Fennec C3, was developed to replace aging Alouette III combat helicopters. It can conduct medical evacuation, troop transport and tactical combat missions.

Unitary Cost : EUR €2.3 million
The Airbus Helicopters H125, formerly the Eurocopter AS350 B3e Ecureuil, is an enhanced version of the AS350 B3 light single-engine helicopter. It is powered by a Turbomeca Arriel 2D turboshaft engine along with a new-generation of digital Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) and an engine data recorder for condition monitoring. As an additional option the aircraft can be operated at its maximum takeoff engine power rating for 30 minutes. This offers the opportunity to equip the AS350 B3e with engine filters for a protection during flight in sand and snow conditions without weight penalty. It incorporates tail rotor modifications for additional ease of piloting, and also features an improved interior design. Eurocopter launched the AS350 B3e at Heli-Expo 2011. The Certification is planned for the summer of 2011, with deliveries to begin before the end of the same year. On March 10, 2011, Air Medical Resource Group became the launch customer for the AS350 B3e model ordering three aircraft plus four options.

Status : Active
Also Known As : ACH130, EC130 T2
Origin : France
Contractor : Airbus Helicopters
Initial Operational Capability (IOC) : November 2012
First Flight : 2011
Total Production : 231
The Airbus Helicopters H130, formerly the Eurocopter EC 130, is a single engine rotorcraft conceived to provide further space, seating capacity, comfort and low vibration levels to the Fennec/Ecureuil family of helicopters. The H130/EC130 T2 is a new version featuring enhanced comfort, improved operational performance and increased versatility unveiled in February 2012 at Heli-Expo in Dallas, Texas. Seven launch customers placed orders for 105 EC130 T2 aircraft to serve in a variety of roles such as aerial tourism and utility to emergency medical airlift. The launch customers are: Maverick Helicopters, Papillon Helicopters, Blue Hawaiian Helicopters, Scandinavian Helicopter Group, Air Commander, Europavia and Enloe FlightCare. Compared with the EC130, the EC130 T2 retains its existing external lines but approximately 70 percent of the airframe structure has been modified. The first flight of the EC130 T2 was carried out in 2011, certification is planned for 2012 summer and the first aircraft is scheduled for delivery in the second half of 2012 becoming the new production standard.
The H130/EC130 T2 is powered by a more powerful and more fuel efficient Turbomeca Arriel 2D turboshaft engine rated at 952-shp and also includes an upgraded main gearbox. Besides, the helicopter incorporates active vibration control system; improved air ventilation, distribution and demisting systems; a cabin interior structure redesign with a full flat floor; a cockpit update for enhanced man-machine interface; new energy-absorbing seats that improve weight and balance for passenger loading; integration of a crashworthy fuel tank; and increased maintenance accessibility for electrical and air conditioning systems.
